Everyone has gone through at least some schooling, or sat through a presentation or lecture, or maybe just tried to watch a speech from a presidential candidate.
How long does the average person’s attention span last?
It turns out that our attention span may be shorter than we think. According to some interesting surveys the average attention span only lasts for about ten minutes. It could be lack of sleep, or being overworked, but if a lecture or speech goes on longer than ten minutes most of us start to tune out.
That doesn’t mean that you can’t give a long lecture and have it be memorable. It simply means that at each 10 minute interval you need to do something emotionally engaging to grab the audience.
It doesn’t help that we are constantly being bombarded with other influences like social media updates or text messages. Our brains battle to multitask. When it comes to high level multitasking like listening and texting it just can’t happen.
