Ideas to Make Extra Money

If you’re needing extra money each month, consider some of these options to supplement your current salary.

Sell Things You’ve Accumulated

Go through your house and clear out things you don’t use anymore. Have a garage sale, or sell online. eBay and BidorBuy are great places to sell anything online, and it’s free to register!

You might be surprised as to how much you could make by just getting rid of the excess in your home.

South Africa’s place of choice for online buying and selling seems to be BidorBuy.

Personally, I can vouch for it, I’ve been using it for years and am very satisfied; I’ve bought many items and have sold as well. Every buyer and seller has a “reputation ranking” so you have a good idea of who you want to do business with before any transactions take place.

Make and Sell

Make things yourself to sell. Get creative; make some craft from wood, or fabric.

Knit gloves or baby clothes. Brew Ginger beer or lemonade. Cook up some hot dogs or package some sweet packets.

Find an appropriate place to sell your product and bring in that extra cash. Again, these things could be sold ‘on the street’ or online, or make a deal with a small shop who would be willing to sell your things for you in exchange for a small commission.

I saw a guy who paid his mom to knit beanies and he sold them at a big profit at university during the winter, he made quite a bit of cash.

I also met a lady who was struggling to even afford food for her kids. She started buying a few bunches of fruit from a farmer and set up little stall outside a production plant between the entrance and the car park. She then sold the individual fruit to the employees of the 24-hour factory. There were numerous shift changes throughout the day for the various departments of the plant, so she had a constant flow of foot traffic coming past her little stall. She now makes enough money to pay her rent every month and support her children. She was even able to hire an employee to watch her stall so she could source more stock without having to close business.

There are opportunities for this kind of thing everywhere.

Another place to sell your craft online is ArtFire.com which is a meeting place for artists, crafters, suppliers and media creators from around the world. As a seller you have two options:

1 – you can choose a basic free account which includes unlimited listings with the opportunity to sell directly from your blog.

2 – Or a Pro account for $15.95 a month with 10 pictures per item plus a customizable “store” and promo features. The site also offers online training in merchandising and marketing.

Part Time Job

Getting a part-time job might sound obvious, but many people lack the desire or the know-how.

There are the usual waitress and barmen jobs, but try think of a few others; data-capturing (watch out for the scams), dog-walking, or running errands for people who are too busy or frail/ill.

Graphic Design

Become a freelance Graphic Designer and look out for unadvertised opportunities.

An example would be designing Company or Web Logos – If you’re good with Photoshop or other similar software, you could make some cash doing this as an online business.

Offer a Service from your House

Try think of services you could offer in your area. Maybe organize a car-pool and give people lifts to work. Offer a laundry-washing service or cook suppers for residents in your street.

Tutor lessons in something you have a good knowledge of. I have a friend who started tutoring Pastel Accounting to small-business owners. He started from a spare room in his house and has now grown it into a successful business.

Hopefully this list will help you make some extra cash, or at the very least, ignite some idea in your head that will prove profitable.

All the best!
