Evolution of Camping and Hiking Gear

The guys at Eastern Mountain Sports recently sent me the following camping infographic. It makes for very interesting reading as it details how camping and hiking equipment has evolved over the years.

It shows how even basic camping gear like the map, sleeping bag, and backpack have improved because of innovative technology.

For example: a camping essential like the tent has evolved from the heavy metal and canvas shelter to the ultra-lightweight 3.2kg (7 lbs.) tent which is widely-used today.

And the first sleeping bags were heavy, cumbersome woollen rugs, and have now improved to a double layer “mummy” design. These are made from nylon to be as light as possible and to conserve maximum heat.
