Create a Personalized Envelope with Google Map

No Gravatar

Google continues to push out more innovative apps.
Besides Google Docs, Gmail, Google Earth, Calendar, Blogger and all the others, they also have a site where you can create instant envelopes.

You can create an envelope lined with a Google Map of any location of your choice.

How to Create an Envelope using Google Map

Go to mapenvelope.com and type in your location. The inside lining of the envelope will then automatically change to show your chosen location.

Then you just type your message in the provided text box and print it out. It prints on a nice template, so you just cut it out and fold along the dotted lines.

Now you have a personalized envelope ready for postage.

** Just a side note, I like to know from all readers whether YOU pronounce it EN-velope or ONvelope/ARNvelope… My wife and I have opposing pronunciations and I’m interested to see what the general majority uses. Let me know in the comments – thanks!

Rap Group Speaks Out Against Political Corruption

No Gravatar

I saw this music video a while ago and I was quite impressed. The production, vision and editing are all sharp; it’s some of the better stuff that I’ve seen from local South African artists.

The group is Koldproduct, and in their single, Full Moon Shining, they address the government about its corruption problems. And they don’t just dance around the topic, they challenge the powers-that-be about their broken promises and all the problems that they’ve created or existing ones they’ve failed to rectify.

Here’s Koldproduct with Full Moon Shining:

Speckled Mousebird Video

No Gravatar

I took this video of a Speckled Mousebird while spending the weekend at a seaside resort.

It was sitting in a Bougain Villa eating some leaves, just asking for a quick camera shot. These birds are quite common in South Africa and Mozambique, and they like most types of habitat, and seem to be happy as long as there are big trees around. They feed on all sorts of plant matter, mainly fruit, but also leaves and nectar.

The Mousebird got its name because of its colour (a dull-mousy brown). Even though it’s quite common, and doesn’t have exotic-coloured feathers, I’ve always liked these birds, probably mainly because of their uniquely long tails which make up half their full length (which is about 35cm).

Get Free Groceries Sent to your Home

No Gravatar

Here is a great opportunity for South African consumers.
Home Tester Club is a company which sends out FREE boxes of groceries and toiletry products to members. There is no charge, no hidden costs and you don’t even have to pay for the postage; it is shipped to you free of charge.

The only thing you have to do is use the products (cool!) and rate the items on the Home webpage. So you just basically say if you thought it was a good product or not, and would you be prepared to pay for it in a shop. Very simple, and no downside. Click here to sign up.

As a member you will be notified by email to apply for a hamper of grocery products to test. If you apply in time, the box will be posted to you free of charge and all you have to do in return is fill out one online questionnaire about the product you just tested.

And when you’re not receiving free boxes of goods, you can still go to the site and read reviews from other consumers which will help you with your next shopping excursion.

It’s perfect place to get uncensored ratings and reviews about latest products in the market. I’ve already signed up and am awaiting my first hamper, so go check it out :-)

Ideas to Make Extra Money

No Gravatar

If you’re needing extra money each month, consider some of these options to supplement your current salary.

Sell Things You’ve Accumulated

Go through your house and clear out things you don’t use anymore. Have a garage sale, or sell online. eBay and BidorBuy are great places to sell anything online, and it’s free to register!

You might be surprised as to how much you could make by just getting rid of the excess in your home.

South Africa’s place of choice for online buying and selling seems to be BidorBuy.

Personally, I can vouch for it, I’ve been using it for years and am very satisfied; I’ve bought many items and have sold as well. Every buyer and seller has a “reputation ranking” so you have a good idea of who you want to do business with before any transactions take place.

Click here to sign up to BidorBuy (it’s free, quick and easy).

Make and Sell

Make things yourself to sell. Get creative; make some craft from wood, or fabric.

Knit gloves or baby clothes. Brew Ginger beer or lemonade. Cook up some hot dogs or package some sweet packets.

Find an appropriate place to sell your product and bring in that extra cash. Again, these things could be sold ‘on the street’ or online, or make a deal with a small shop who would be willing to sell your things for you in exchange for a small commission.

I saw a guy who paid his mom to knit beanies and he sold them at a big profit at university during the winter, he made quite a bit of cash.

I also met a lady who was struggling to even afford food for her kids. She started buying a few bunches of fruit from a farmer and set up little stall outside a production plant between the entrance and the car park. She then sold the individual fruit to the employees of the 24-hour factory. There were numerous shift changes throughout the day for the various departments of the plant, so she had a constant flow of foot traffic coming past her little stall. She now makes enough money to pay her rent every month and support her children. She was even able to hire an employee to watch her stall so she could source more stock without having to close business.

There are opportunities for this kind of thing everywhere.

Another place to sell your craft online is ArtFire.com which is a meeting place for artists, crafters, suppliers and media creators from around the world. As a seller you have two options:

1 – you can choose a basic free account which includes unlimited listings with the opportunity to sell directly from your blog.

2 – Or a Pro account for $15.95 a month with 10 pictures per item plus a customizable “store” and promo features. The site also offers online training in merchandising and marketing.

Part Time Job

Getting a part-time job might sound obvious, but many people lack the desire or the know-how.

There are the usual waitress and barmen jobs, but try think of a few others; data-capturing (watch out for the scams), dog-walking, or running errands for people who are too busy or frail/ill.

Graphic Design

Become a freelance Graphic Designer and look out for unadvertised opportunities.

An example would be designing Company or Web Logos – If you’re good with Photoshop or other similar software, you could make some cash doing this as an online business.

Offer a Service from your House

Try think of services you could offer in your area. Maybe organize a car-pool and give people lifts to work. Offer a laundry-washing service or cook suppers for residents in your street.

Tutor lessons in something you have a good knowledge of. I have a friend who started tutoring Pastel Accounting to small-business owners. He started from a spare room in his house and has now grown it into a successful business.

~~ o o O o o ~~

Hopefully this list will help you make some extra cash, or at the very least, ignite some idea in your head that will prove profitable.

All the best!
